For two years, Karie worked with Exact Labour Hire as a Kitchen Attendant on Rottnest Island, WA.It was more than just a job — it was a chapter of growth, learning, and opportunity that would change his life and the lives of his family back home.
Karie joined the team with a strong work ethic and an open heart. In the busy kitchen environment, he quickly adapted to the fast pace, building his skills in food preparation, organisation, and teamwork. His reliability and positive attitude made him a valued member of the Rottnest Island crew.
“On behalf of my wife and family, we are very happy and thankful to Exact Labour for the opportunity given to me to work in Australia to achieve our goals.” — Karie
The impact of his time in Australia has been felt far beyond the kitchen. Through his earnings, Karie was able to support his family in ways that will be remembered for years to come — from paying school fees, contributing to traditional ceremonies, and supporting church activities, to making home improvements.
One of his proudest personal moments is preparing for his son’s upcoming wedding in November — a milestone celebration that he has been able to help fund, ensuring the day will be everything his family dreamed of.
But perhaps his greatest long-term achievement has been starting KJW Hire, his own business in Vanuatu, renting out tents and marquees for events. This step into entrepreneurship, made possible by the savings and skills gained during his time in Australia, gives Karie a stable and ongoing source of income. It also allows him to contribute to his community in a new way, providing services for weddings, community gatherings, and cultural events.
These accomplishments reflect what is at the heart of the PALM Scheme and Exact Labour Hire: creating real opportunities for Pacific Island workers to earn, learn, and contribute to their families and communities.
For Karie, the two years on Rottnest Island weren’t just about wages — they were about dignity, cultural connection, and the chance to build something lasting. The support he received was not only about performance but about helping him grow, develop new skills, and feel understood in a culturally appropriate way, often in his own language.
As Karie returns home, he takes with him new skills, lasting friendships, and the knowledge that his hard work has created a stronger future for his family. His journey is a reminder of why we do what we do — connecting people, supporting growth, and making a real difference, one worker at a time.
